What is Theory Test and do i need to take it?

If you are a learner driver you must take and pass your theory test before you book your practical test. If you already have a driving licence you might not have to take another theory test if you want to start driving a different vehicle.

This consists of a set of 50 multiple choice questions, which are chosen randomly from a bank of over a thousand, covering all of the major driving topics. Candidates are given 57 minutes to complete the test and must answer 43 or more questions correctly in order to pass.

You should arrive at the test centre in plenty of time. Once you have registered at reception you will go through to the test room. You may not take anything into the room with you. All personal items must be stored in the lockers provided.

Once you are in the test room you may not talk to or distract other candidates. The computer screen will display your name and the category of test you are taking.

If you have any problems during the theory test, you should raise your hand to attract the attention of the test invigilator. If you want to book your theory test online you should visit http://www.dsa.gov.uk

The theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to successfully complete the theory test. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test.

The hazard perception test

Otherwise known as the second part of the theory test, the hazard perception test deals with testing the candidate’s ability to identify and deal with potential hazards on the road. He/She will be shown a set of 14 video clips, each clip will be minute in length showing possible hazards involving pedestrians, road conditions and road users. There are a maximum of 15 hazards to identify and each one can earn you up to five points depending on how quickly you manage to spot them. In order to pass you are expected to score a minimum of 4 out of a possible 75.
